Endless richness – art and culture along the Romantic Road

We gaze in wonder and are pleased to be learning so much here – about the Late Gothic, but also about sponsorship in the Middle Ages …

From the Gothic period to the present

If you visit churches on the stretch between Würzburg and Füssen, you’ll not only be undertaking a wonderful journey through different eras of art history. If you visit the sacred buildings along the Romantic Road, you’ll see the impressive Baroque architecture of the Wies Church in Steingaden and the Romanesque style of the Church of St. Jacob in Friedberg, but you’ll also experience magical moments: in the Church of Our Lord in Creglingen, when the evening sunlight brightly illuminates the world-famous altar by Riemenschneider, and in the Church of St. Moritz in Augsburg, with its modern design suffused with light, where a children’s choir is singing in the chancel.

Magic in the museums

Museums, castles, monasteries, architectural and artistic monuments – fascinating attractions await you everywhere. In Schongau’s town museum, visitors can walk over a Medieval heating system, and in the interactive Fugger and Welser Museum in Augsburg, books come to life. In the School Museum in Tauberbischofsheim, you feel like a miscreant in the front row of the class, and in the Käthe Kruse Museum, nostalgic memories are stirred.

Churches, castles, dream settings

You’d need a weighty tome to describe the richness of art and culture that travellers  encounter on the Romantic Road. It would be a thick book with a large number of chapters bearing titles such as ‘Sublime churches in dream settings’, ‘Where you can find the perfect museum’, and ‘Impressive castles that transport you to a different era’ – to name but a few.
But you’d better not wait till this book appears. Come and visit the Romantic Road instead, and see it all with your own eyes!
