From 1832 to 1836, Crown Prince Maximilian had the medieval Schwanstein Castle converted into Hohenschwangau Palace in the neo-Gothic style. King Max II and his family used the castle as a summer and hunting residence. His son, Ludwig II, spent a large part of his childhood and youth here. The 19th century interior has been preserved to this day. Each room is decorated with wall paintings based on designs by Moritz von Schmind and Ludwig Lindenschmidt the Elder. Both castles can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Tickets for the royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are only available from the Ticket Center Hohenschwangau, Alpseestr. 12, Hohenschwangau.
